There is so much wrong with the American public school system, where does one start to address the problems. Maybe one could devise a database for broken policies, open a service center for disheartened teachers, build a drive-through for educational supplements, or maybe erect a trauma triage for an acute lack of education. That would call for reform. The DeVos family yelled the battle cry first; leading the way was Betsy DeVos. The extended DeVos family has always been pioneers in problem solving. Thus, the greatest feat ahead of them might just be education reform. It goes without saying the DeVos family is actively involved, and support many foundations and programs, to many to list. Similarly, Betsy DeVos focused attention on education is significant. It shows she is wholeheartedly concerned about fixing the school option problem. Betsy is recognized as a principal promoter for the educational-choice movement. Presently, there are over thirty publicly-funded private-choice schools, and the numbers are increasing. Betsy and Dick DeVos points out voucher programs are popping-up all over the country and they are optimistic the trend will continue. Social consciousness is awakening to the fact traditional public schools are not working. Both Dick and Betsy say the educational reform programs like vouchers, tax credits, and education savings accounts will alleviate the ills of traditional public schools. Dick comments that Christian schools are more desirable, has better energy, teacher and students are captivity involved in teaching and learning. Betsy recalls both her and husband Dick, while visiting private schools became increasing committed to offering the same option to a greater percentage of families. Dick DeVos was elected to the State Board of Education in Michigan in 1990. Not to be outdone, Betsy was the underpinning that gave scholarships to low-income families.

The educational-choice movement got momentum while Dick DeVos and Betsy DeVos were at the helm of the Children First America and the American Education Reform Council; a thrust of energy propelled the reform to new heights.
